Nicholay ATANASSOV is one of the leading names in the Bulgarian cynological science. His University education is Expert of Animal Breeding. Between 1984 and 1987 he worked as a Research Fellow in the Science Research Institute of Animal Breeding in the town of Stara Zagora. He worked as a Teacher in animal breeding from 1987 to 2006.
Mr. Atanassov is the only cynologist member of the Union of the Scientists. He is the author of three of the best-sellers on dogs in Bulgaria: two monographs about the German Shepherd Dog: "All About the German Shepherd Dog" (published 1996) and "In the World of the German Shepherd Dog" (published1998) and also the monograph "The Dog and Its Behaviour" (published 2000). He is a co-author of "Reference Book on Stockbreeding" published by the Thracian University, Stara Zagora and the student book "Sheepbreeding and Goatbreeding" for students at the Thracian University. In both university editions Mr. Atanassov has written the chapters on the use of livestockguarding dogs and herding dogs.
He has written individually more than 250 articles for a number of specialized newspapers and magazines.
Most of his research work is focused on the origin, breed-formation and use of dogs in service cynology. This is the main subject matter with which in 1988 he has been accepted as a regular member of the Union of Scientists.
Most of his research studies are in the field of selection and behaviour of dogs. Since 1998 he has worked on the aspects of zoo-psychology based on the study of dogs’ behaviour. Most of his work is related to the problems of dogs’ aggression and the ways of its suppression.
Mr. Atanassov is a consultant in cynology at the Extension Service of the Thracian University. He is a regular and honored member of many foreign cynological organizations, as well as of the nature-protecting Greenpeace.
Mr. Atanassov is a founder and president of Canine Information Center "CANISINFORM" (1991) and of Consulting Information Center "MEGA-AXELHEIM" (1995).
He has been a member of the World Union for German Shepherd Dog Clubs (German abbreviation WUSV) since 1984. In 1992 he has founded and managed the major specialized organization of cynology in Bulgaria - "Bulgarian German Shepherd Dog Society (BSDS)" (German abbreviation BSV). In 1994, Mr. Atanassov, during the World Congress of WUSV in Bremen, Germany, has become the youngest president, who has been successful in joining the World Union of German Shepherd Dog Associations.
At the moment Mr. Atanassov is primarily working on the problems of dogs’ behaviour. He is a founder of the "Center of Experimental Cynology".
